SmartSynchT Offers Enhanced Energy Monitoring Solutions for ComEdDeal Will Expand ComEd's Use of SmartMeters for Load Curtailment Program Jackson, MS — May 16, 2002 Recognizing the need for easily accessible and timely energy usage information, Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) recently contracted with SmartSynch, the leading provider of smart metering solutions to the energy and utility industry, to deploy 1,200 SmartMeters to its commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. ComEd is deploying a portion of the meters for a load curtailment program that currently offers ComEd’s C&I customers energy monitoring to provide more control over their energy consumption and costs. The program involves approximately 140 participants who contract with ComEd for a predetermined amount of kilowatts to be curtailed. Energy monitoring equipment allows ComEd to remotely monitor and work with these customers to ensure they comply with their contractual curtailment commitment. As a result, when a curtailment is called ComEd will know immediately how much power has been shed. Previously, ComEd would get this data hourly via a less efficient modem-based computer system. In order to upgrade its current system, ComEd chose the SmartMeter SystemSM from SmartSynch to ensure that both ComEd and their customers have real-time access to energy usage information and thus can make changes to their power consumption if needed. “The SmartMeter System from SmartSynch helps us manage demand on the electric system more effectively,” said John Parise, Marketing Manager for ComEd. “For curtailment, it is extremely important that we know as soon as possible how much load has been shed so that we can work with customers that may not have curtailed to their fullest potential.” “The SmartMeter System is perfect for ComEd’s curtailment program, granting both ComEd and its customers a near real-time picture of their performance,” said Mark Rodgers, CEO of SmartSynch. “Not only will the participants of the program be able to better manage their energy consumption, but ComEd will also be able to better manage the curtailment program. In the end, everyone will benefit.” ComEd is utilizing ABB Energy Interactive to assist with the data from the Energy Cooperative members. The software package from ABB is an online analysis tool that processes the information gathered by the Transaction Management System from SmartSynch and delivers it via the Internet to both ComEd and its customers so that they will have a complete report on their performance. ComEd plans to have 300 meters fully deployed by June. ComEd will use some of the remaining meters to replace old KWH/Demand meters that were used for ComEd’s Load Factor Management program. The rest of the meters will be utilized for customers who have expressed security concerns. Through its real-time connectivity, the SmartMeter System will allow ComEd to read these customers’ meters without compromising any security issues.
