SmartSynch Launches Statewide SmartKids Initiative at Pecan Park Elementary School in Jackson, Miss.

Jackson, MS — September 12, 2008

SmartSynch Inc., a leading provider of technology solutions that help utilities and their customers better understand and manage electricity usage, is launching its statewide SmartKids Initiative to educate elementary school students and their families on the importance of conserving energy in their schools and homes. To commemorate the launch, SmartSynch’s chief executive officer, Stephen D. Johnston, will visit 4th graders at Pecan Park Elementary School on September 12th to share his knowledge of this important issue with students and give them educational materials and an energy-saving Compact Fluorescent Light bulb (CFL) to use in their homes.

"Americans represent only five percent of the world’s population, but we consume one-fourth of the world’s energy," said Johnston. "At the current rate, global demand for electricity will exceed supply in five years, which is one reason why energy conservation is the most talked about issue on the Presidential Campaign trail. The good news is we can solve this problem simply by making subtle changes to our everyday behavior. Even right here in Mississippi, small decisions can have a major impact on the earth and its inhabitants, but it all starts with proper education.”

Materials distributed to students are based on the premise that "a small start can make a big difference" and include a brochure asking students to participate in three important steps: 1) Sign the SmartKid Pledge to conserve energy and make the earth cleaner, greener and brighter for everyone; 2) Replace a light bulb in their home with the energy-saving Compact Fluorescent Light, which uses less power and has a longer rated life than regular bulbs; and 3) Begin taking small steps to conserve, such as turning off lights when they aren’t in use, waiting until there’s a full load to wash clothes, and unplugging unused electronics. Other fact sheets contain tips for making a home more energy efficient, and the origin of renewable and non-renewable energy.

Johnston said efforts to raise awareness for the SmartKids Initiative and its message will be ongoing during the school year. For more information, or to request an appearance at a school, please contact Laura Pickard at 601-362-1780 or visit www.smartsynch.com/smartkids.
