Itron Announces Development Partnership with SmartSynch to Provide Public Wireless Communications Technology for OpenWay™ AMI SolutionSpokane, WA — October 23, 2006 Itron Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today that SmartSynch, a global leader in wireless technology for the energy industry, will provide the public wireless communications technology component for OpenWay™ , Itron's new advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) platform that is currently under development. SmartSynch's development efforts will enable wide-area network (WAN) connectivity for the OpenWay platform by providing an integrated, under-the-cover communications module that leverages public wireless networks for transmission of all critical metering and event data. Like all other OpenWay network components, SmartSynch's public wireless communications module will support the ANSI C12.22 standard for communication of metering-based data over a network. "We are tremendously pleased to be partnering with Itron and be an integral part of this bold initiative," said Stephen D. Johnston, SmartSynch CEO. "Itron's confidence in our technology and its high-level of support underscores our reputation as the leading provider of public wireless metering solutions. We've been working with Itron on this development for some time and we're very pleased to formally announce this partnership to the marketplace." Because Itron's OpenWay system architecture is based on open standards, utilities have a great deal of flexibility selecting communications technology appropriate for their needs. For utilities that choose to communicate with their meters via public wireless communication networks, Itron's OpenWay metering devices will be embedded with SmartSynch's wireless technology to facilitate two-way communications, interval and on-demand reads, outage notification, tamper and theft detection, remote firmware upgrades, and a host of additional advanced metering capabilities. The SmartSynch component supports data communications on multiple public wireless networks, including GSM/GPRS, CDMA/1xRTT and Wi-Fi. "We want our customers to know that the OpenWay development effort is bringing together industry-leading technology providers such as SmartSynch and Itron to deliver a solution that sets a new standard for AMI technology," said Malcolm Unsworth, senior vice president of Itron. "We believe Itron's commitment to an open, standards-based architecture for OpenWay represents a fundamental change in the AMI technology landscape by giving our utility customers the freedom to bring together best-in-class technologies."
